Where to buy the charts

Phil's print publisher, Danney Behar of Walrus Music, retired and transferred the whole Phil Kelly catalog to eJazzLines. All of Phil's big band material is now sold there; search the catalog for "Phil Kelly" to see the current titles, preview pages and prices.

Instrumentation

The charts are written for typical stage band instrumentation, 4/4/5/4: four trumpets, four trombones, five saxophones and a four-piece rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass and drums. Several of the ballads add extra keyboard sampler parts, which on the records carried string pads behind the soloist.

Which tunes are in print

The published library includes most of the scores on Convergence Zone and My Museum. If you want to hear a chart before you order it, the album track lists and audio clips are a good place to start: "Bluelonius", "Juan Beatov Stomp" and "Zip Code 2005" from My Museum all have clips there.

What directors should know

These charts were written for professional readers. The Los Angeles band on My Museum recorded them with no rehearsal, and the Northwest band cut "O.T.B.S." in one take, sight-reading. Critics singled out the contrapuntal writing in "Pleading Dim Cap", the 7/8 and 7/4 groove of "Juan Beatov Stomp" and the split two-part harmonies between saxes and trumpets that recur through Phil's writing; the reviews of Convergence Zone and My Museum describe each chart in detail and will help you judge fit for your band.

Solos are written to feature players across the band rather than one star, so student and community bands with several capable soloists will get the most from them.

Need something that is not in the catalog, such as a feature for a particular soloist or a chart for unusual instrumentation? Phil writes custom arrangements on commission, quoted per project.
