What to write about

Commissions

For a new arrangement, tell Phil the ensemble and instrumentation, the tune, the occasion, any featured soloist or singer and their key, and your deadline. The custom arranging services page lists the kinds of work he takes on and what to send with a request.

Buying charts

Published big band charts are sold through eJazzLines, not directly. The big band print music page explains instrumentation and which tunes are available. Write to Phil if you cannot find a chart you heard on one of the albums.

Questions about arranging

Students and working writers can send one specific question per email about jazz composition, arranging, string writing or orchestral scoring. Put "Ask Phil" in the subject line and attach a short sketch file or PDF if it helps.

Press, radio and recordings

Journalists, radio programmers and presenters can request information about the albums, interviews or references. Client and award lists, references and demo reels are available on request. For CD purchases, the albums are listed with their labels on the recordings page.

Questions about a recording or credit

If you are asking about a specific chart, session or broadcast, name the album, track or show and roughly when you heard it. Phil's credits run to more than 3,500 commercials, films and industrial projects, so a title and a date save a lot of guessing.

Where Phil is based

Phil lives in Bellingham, Washington, in the far north of the Puget Sound region. Most arranging work is done remotely, with scores and parts delivered as files, so location is rarely a barrier for commissions.
